I like Hayato Sumino's performances at this year competition a lot and really missed him in the finals. Japan's team was very strong and the jury choice was Sorita and Kobayashi, excellent pianists, so someone has to go home before finals, like so many of other great pianists, Hayato Sumino wasn't allowed to play in the finals. Sad.

The more I listen to him the more I am captivated. He is the true spirit of music. Can't believe he didn't make the finals but world recognizes genius and he will continue shine and be a beacon for years to come. And if you haven't watched his video yet of the Rachmaninoff 2nd do yourself a favor and head on over.

What I consider to be a miracle/blessing is that competitors from the Far East perform at such a superior level. Their level of education must be extremely high. With determination most people around the world “can play the piano well” but to have the ability to understand Chopin’s music and the culture of his far away country in order to represent it in a competition is outstanding. (I couldn’t do such a thing, say in Japan, even if I’ve bent backwards, even though I’m an engineer and a pianist).

Every time I listen to Hayato’s performances at this competition, I keenly feel how precious every moment, every performance is. Pianists play the same pieces over and over again, but they are never the same. Different settings, different emotions, different audiences…Many understand this in their minds, but IMHO, few people know better than Hayato. That’s maybe he is also very good at improvisations, which impressed me so much. We witness the music is just being born from his hands as he plays. I really cherish his performances here, on this occasion, under enormous pressure yet with exquisite sensibilities that were made possible through this setting, the 18th Chopin Competition. I’m so happy he was able to deliver such a performance that he described as “I became nothing, but I was here at the hall, just filled with the sounds of Chopin’s music.” (quote from his interview after the third round) Since he was evolving so fast through the competition, I forever lament the lost opportunity to listen to his concerto on this occasion although I really appreciate his solo performances here.

You've probably seen it, but there is one performance on a piano at an airport or something where someone (or someones) call out a couple of unrelated pieces. He thinks for about 30 seconds, then something that sounds like it was painstakingly struggled over for months comes out...spectacular. What amazes me as much about this guy is that many classical musicians at this level play classical, pretty much exclusively. Hyato has excellent jazz presentations on his channel and Hiromi's (another to definitely watch) Tom and Jerry, which he ADDS stuff to and performs flawlessly at absurd velocity. I've seen several others try to perform Hiromi's version and just plain mutilate it. As a technician, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone better than this fellow. If you go look at his vid of him playing at seven, with NUANCE, it's not remotely as surprising. The other thing I really find interesting and appreciate about him is his playfulness. Go look at the stunt he pulls, with amazing results, of Bumblebee at 250, on a TOY piano, if by any chance you haven't seen it. I slowed it to try to see how much of it was even recognizable and how accurate it was in general, and how complete, and while bits of it were not there, the majority is absolutely amazingly accurate given the absurd meter. I couldn't remotely judge this at real time playback. And then there's the time he was doodling an interlude in one of his hour long online performances, and hit a note that was obviously not remotely in the progression. He stops and hits the note several times, sort of like he can't believe it happened, or maybe thinks it's funny, who knows, then continues on. I would have loved to have been privy to his thoughts at that moment, and at other times when I see him smile while playing, and I am not remotely knowledgeably competent enough to figure out why, if in fact it was something perceivable, or just some inner conversation or maybe just a difficult passage nailed. Keith Jarret, another favorite of mine in the jazz improve world, especially the YT performance of Summertime, where some of the middle portions always bring chill bumps personally, has made similar statements although a bit stranger, like feeling himself melting into the upper keys, or something similar. THAT is flow, both cases, AND mastery, pure and simple, or not, as the case may be. Cheers. You hit several of the nails I have often thought so squarely on the head I thought I would take the time to expand into some of mine. I hope at least someone reads this far and enjoyed it. I'm no poet or musical expert, obviously, but just my two cents.

@Akim Rebecchi Me too! I listened all finalists piano. I liked some pieces played by them but not all of them. Sorita was’t calm at the final but he enjoyed by himself very much which was funny but acceptable and OK. Because of time difference, I have been listening at my bed half sleeping some times. But I have awakened by Eva’s play, she drives orchestra in incredibly slow tempo. What I liked was variation of Morzart played by Bruce. But I believe, if Hayato played same variations, he would be played far more better. Because the style of music is very much with him like twinkle twinkle little stars variations which Hayato plays well. Specially he is good at improvisation.

Akim Rebecchi

@action class Evidently Aimi liked the jury. At least this is what I want to think, otherwise it leads to conspiracy. I suppose the Jury took into account the various aspects of each interpreter, as well as mere interpretation. I listened to all the finalists, and I liked something or various things about each one, but not everything (which is difficult to achieve). I had quite a lot of fun with all of them, even with Aimi, but the curious thing is that I don't like to listen to them more than a few times, something that doesn't happen with Sumino, where listening and listening is almost diary. But obviously they are personal tastes.

@Akim Rebecchi I see your point. Bruce, Garcia, and Armellini entertained us very much and they presented their own characters throughout every stage. But Aimi’s way was different. There are few more similar contestants but they were not promoted to the final. I wonder why only Aimi had chosen. What would you reckon?

Akim Rebecchi
Akim Rebecchi

Aimi Kobayashi is very good, but I think she lacks many exaggerations in her interpretations (like other competitors), which are often too pushed towards some extremes, thus resulting in being heavy to listen to. I agree that Sumino's Polish Fantasia is more touching, precisely because it is simple, natural, direct and without too many pretensions other than wanting to show the beauty of the Music composed by Chopin's Genius.

@Sudhaunshu Hardikar ok but criticism is fine but it should be positively directed. My point. As an example of what I mean.. The recent death of Nelson Friere points out how some greats of music and piano strive against absolute criticism. They stay away from it,!!! BTW. He(Nelson, age 77) was the absolute reason Marta Augerich was not judging the chopin this year. Her best friend in Brazil was dying in October and she stayed with him. Nothing can ever substitute for the positive feelings we offer another I hope my positivity to Hayato will be understood in that same way...I hope you continue well yourself with positive wishes from me.

@robert flynn I don't feel any inclination to criticize Hayato, he played fantastically! I've listened to this video a couple of times already. Just trying to keep things reasonable, there are many amazing pianists out there. Also I feel as an artist you have to remain open to criticism. Closing one off can be helpful to maintain confidence (though I don't think someone of Hayato Sumino's calibre would struggle excessively with self-esteem issues), but we have to be critical to an extent to improve.

@alessandro it was an insult against hayatos honor to put in far less qualified not to mention much younger and not really experienced players 😉...how old was Bui?? Didn't he take lessons from the same canadian/Vietnam teacher as Bruce Liu..former winner of 1950 Chopin international?(Dang thai son) . He could have been south Korean ? Not sure. All of the finalists were somehow already programmed into the system when contest began. Just my observations. The judges never intended to make Hayato be in finals. 😆 it took 5 years to expose their evil plan. I've thought about it. 1the scores should be open and transparent, like Olympics. 2 once a player goes through to finals they should not return. Leaves room for newer players.

Some pianists whose innate gifts are such to be directly aligned to the source of Music itself humble themselves upon entering competitions such as this to make antiquated the ideals of even the most seasoned of jurors. @おいだえみ from what I know there are no recorded examples of Chopin playing!@ @ Hayato did know. I dont how he found chopin. He said he was one with chopin. I believe him. Even the judges don't really know how chopin played or changed the written score. All they know is how the polish people feel best about it. Hayato should do what he wants. I want the judges of Chopin to publish their scores, points so everyone can see them like Olympics. So they can't be unfair and decide the outcome before they begin. The judges were not going to put Hayato into finals no matter what or how he performs. They had too many from 2015 that returned and they had to put them all in finals. They fix the scores. Like Bui, and Bruce Liu or Sorita and the boy from s. Korea who went to Moscow to learn. They were all taking lessons from dang thai son who won Chopin in 1950. Like favoritism . Thats my take. Hope you don't mind me commenting to you. Bye.

@Tamaki Babul I am glad you've clarified more your first point. Iam assuming it's yours i responded to. I think Hayato opened my eye to Japanese people who are artists and performers. He was brave to go alone to Warsaw; he did not have the traditional international backers or teachers as others did but went anyway. I know he'll be rewarded for his unselfish actions. Padawerski was like Hayato . Or versa visa. P. was a polish icon. Not only piano but later on statesman. And later leader of Poland. I mentioned this similarity on Hayatos Chopin page. I am glad I subscribe and donate to him.

They probably don't include him in the final because his concerto performance would easily be the 2nd most viewed video of this concerto (after Seong Jin Cho) and jumpstart his international career very quickly, like Anna Fedorova's Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 2 (she was eliminated at Stage 2 in Chopin 2010) and yet she has more views than Yulianna Avdeeva.

My favorite part about Cateen’s playing is the fact that he can manage to fill someone like me, who is not a usual connoisseur of classical pieces, with such great emotion just by listening to him play. There’s a deep sense of feeling that goes into his piano playing that reaches into my heart unlike any other pianist I’ve heard. I think that’s such a talent.

@Sudhaunshu Hardikar thank you for the recommendation! I would really love to further expand my knowledge of classical pieces, and have been on the lookout for those with styles I can really get into. It’s been a bit of a hard search but maybe looking in that direction may help! ^^

I think you might want to just listen to more classical performers. Particularly pieces from the romantic era, or perhaps Shostakovich and music like his. I think you'll find a lot many more players who are also able to convey the imagery to people new to classical music as well.

Chopin i Chopin.

https://youtu.be/sQLAqYZt6Pk

I'm actually happy Hayato Sumino didn't advance farther because it taught me a very valuable lesson. When you judge in any capacity, you remove feeling, you cut yourself from the humanity that gives you purpose and meaning in life. When you allow yourself to feel toward the greatest truths you are able to gain perspective while still being able to make decisions. To me, the undeniable truth is that his connection to this music is a strong as anyone's.

The performances of Hayato Sumino were stunning and impressive at every round in the Competition. I can’t still understand why he couldn’t go to final. @L Tran we don't really know. What scores did Hayato get? All good playing at stage 3. How far apart were their averages ...maybe too close together to separate. No conflict in this case. Just too many good competitors. You can ask a judge to recuse... but they won't. Lol.

Many of the 12 finalists had played into finals in years before so they were known. They were sort if scared of a youtube success like Hayato and intimidated by his classy style . The polish group was 30% of total and were in the contest and finals before. They the judges were forced to move them up and into finals again. Just his unfortunate timing.
